Two-time Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KOs) will defend his WBO title against Eleider "Storm" Alvarez (23-0-0, 11 KOs). The highly anticipated match is set for Saturday, August 4 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The Russian Kovalev suffered two brutal losses to Andre "SOG" Ward back in 2016 and 2017, but since then he has been on a hot streak. Last year he defeated Vyacheslav Shabranskyy and earlier this year he took down Igor Mikhalkin - both of whom had nearly spotless records until they tangled with Kovalev. This fight with Alvarez marks Kovalev's fourth time fighting in Atlantic City, where he has had a strong track record including his impressive 2014 victory over future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins. Kovalev eagerly awaits a chance to take on WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Adonis "Superman" Stevenson, who has so far avoided getting in the ring with him several times.

Eleider Alvarez is an undefeated champion from Apartado, Colombia who will be making his HBO debut with this fight. In 2015, he reigned victorious over Isaac Chilemba to secure the WBC mandatory position and a chance to face Adonis Stevenson. However, Stevenson has remained elusive in accepting the battle and now Alvarez has not fought in nearly a year. When the opportunity to face off against Kovalev presented itself, Alvarez leapt at the chance.

"Alvarez has earned his title shot but 'Chickenson' dodged him, just like he dodged me," said Kovalev. "I want to fight the best in my division. Alvarez took the fight with me without hesitation. I respect that and I am excited to face him in my return to Atlantic City."

"I am extremely happy; I said "yes" as soon as I had the offer," said Alvarez. "I waited for a long time to get a shot at a world title. I don't want to hear about Adonis Stevenson anymore. I am focused on Sergey Kovalev!"
